Analogue and digital linear modulation techniques for mobile satellite

    Get PDF
The choice of modulation format for a mobile satellite service is complex. The subjective performance is summarized of candidate schemes and voice coder technologies. It is shown that good performance can be achieved with both analogue and digital voice systems, although the analogue system gives superior performance in fading. The results highlight the need for flexibility in the choice of signaling format. Linear transceiver technology capable of using many forms of narrowband modulation is described

The family under the microscope: an experiment testing economic models of household choice.

We devise and execute three experiments to test key features of models of household decision-making. Using established couples (married and unmarried) we test income pooling, unanimity and Pareto efficiency. Subjects make choices individually and jointly and are asked to make predictions about their partner’s choices. Unanimity is rejected. Income pooling is not rejected in joint choice but has less explanatory power in individual choice. In direct tests both sexes do not pool income completely, but in econometric tests across all tasks, women place an equal weight on payoffs but men discount their partner’s payoffs by between 15 and 20%. We find that transparency has little impact on deviations from income pooling or indeed on behaviour generally. Many joint choices deviate from the Pareto principle in a systematic manner suggesting that choices made as a couple are more risk averse than individual decisions.experiment; household; unitary; income pooling; Pareto; family

Guidelines for Sharing Recreation and Park Facilities and their Costs

    Get PDF
As vacation travel costs increase, people will look for substitute recreation in their home communities. This will create a demand for facilities and services that the tax income of the community will not cover, particularly in rural areas and small towns. Perhaps such communities should investigate the possibility of using school faciliites for recreation and park purpose. Cooperation between school boards and municipalities can supply facilities neither agency along can afford. It can also eliminate costly duplication of facilities and services. About half of the sports and recreation facilities in this country are under the jurisdiction of tax supported schools, but they are open less than half the hours each day and half the day each year. There is a growing recognition of the public’s rights to use the schools at times that do not interfere with normal school programs. Important procedures in developing recreation programs and in establishing joint cooperation between school and recreation park officials are as follows: 1. Establish a joint committee that includes members of the school board, city council, recreation and parks authority, as well as the superintendent of schools, director of parks and recreation, city manager, and the planning director. 2. Hold periodic conferences between city and school officials, both at the policy and administrative levels. 3. Establish a written contract that spells out how the facilities of the agencies involved can be used cooperatively.

Grief of Adolescents with Learning Disabilities: Proceed with Caution

    Get PDF
This research review and student-centered manual explores the findings and assertions of various studies relating to the antecedents and trends of grief among adolescence with learning disabilities. The meta-analysis explores numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and accredited studies in an attempt to gain a greater understanding of the current landscape of youth sadness, with a special focus on youths with learning disabilities. As multiple studies have indicated, overwhelming grief and disability harassment is a serious problem plaguing American youths. The reviewed literature also indicated that youths with learning disabilities are at a greater risk of experiencing prolonged episodes of sadness. Although the literature as a whole believes that that youth stress and emotional grief is increasing, there is conflicting information concerning how well current identification and treatments are working. By comparing various peer-reviewed journal articles discussing the various antecedents of youth grief, this researcher sought to gain a better understanding of overall points of focus when discussing trends sadness in youths with learning disabilities. The researcher synthesized the acquired information into a practical, student-centered manual that strives to support students with learning disabilities experiencing grief

Functions of Selected Agencies and Organizations Contributing to Rural Development in Western South Dakota

    Get PDF
This material is directed primarily to the large number of people engaged in Rural Development activities in the eleven western counties of South Dakota. It provides information to help local governments and concerned individuals better understand the objectives, functions and kinds of professional and technical services being provided by Federal government agencies, multicounty agencies and organizations working in rural development. Local leaders involved in developmental projects should be encouraged to make use of the programs of government and non-government organizations that can make worthwhile contributions to achieve local goals. The involvement of local people is basic to rural development. Local leadership must be motivated to evaluate local situations and determine what they wish accomplished. The government agencies and rural development groups in the eleven western counties of South Dakota have a responsibility to encourage local leadership, to offer sound counsel and make available each individual agency\u27s capabilities at the proper time and in an appropriate manner. Each agency and organization discussed in this material has been given the opportunity to review their section
